True Green Cities/Celebrating Fifteen Years: Reviving A Furniture Showroom

Remaking a Furniture Showroom

The 1895 Field & Wright Building on North Main Street in downtown Jamestown, NY is a contributing component of the Downtown Jamestown National Register Historic District and therefore potentially eligible for historic preservation tax credits for its rehabilitation.  Jamestown is located in Chautauqua County, and was a city known for its furniture making.

The Jamestown Renaissance Corporation with the Gebbie Foundation and the Chautauqua Area Development, LLC hired my team to provide professional services to prepare an Adaptive Reuse Feasibility Study on the 22,500 square feet Field & Wright Building. Built in 1895 as the Field & Wright Furniture Showroom, it has been primarily vacant (except for the ground floor) for over ten years.

The Field and Wright Furniture Showroom was built in 1895 during the height of the downtown construction.  It is a four-story brick commercial block building with a brick corbel and a cast-iron cornice. The North Main Street elevation of this corner building features four bays, each with a pair of one-over-one double-hung windows. The four storefront bays step-down from north to south, reflecting the street’s gradient, as do the windows on the second and third floors. The southern elevation on E. First Street has rounded windows and intact cast iron details.  Past occupants have included furniture stores and other commercial and retail businesses. The final report will be distributed in May and we hope to move forward with the building’s rehabilitation.

I will be posting about new projects and ideas from my 15th year this week.
