True Green Cities/Celebrating Fifteen Years: What’s Next?
Celebrating Fifteen Years! It’s been fifteen years since I launched Barbara A. Campagna/Architecture + Planning, PLLC on April 19th, 2011 and while many things have changed, my goal to work on “greening what’s already here” continues to be met, often in places I never expected.
From Downtown Buffalo to Downtown Jamestown
If you’ve read my other blogs this week, you’ve read how I’ve moved to Jamestown, NY and have some projects there and elsewhere around the country. I loved my office in Buffalo in the Tri-Main Center, a former Ford factory filled with designers and artists. I’m happy to say that my new office in downtown Jamestown is darling and a contributing component to the Downtown Jamestown Historic District (National Register). It has 10’ ceilings with lots of light, a new bamboo/eucalyptus floor I had installed. It makes me happy to walk in every day. The National Register describes it as:
16-22 W. 3rd Street, c.1915 (Contributing)
Two-story brick commercial building that was one of two buildings (along with 326 Cherry Street) that were built on the footprint of the Gokey Shoe Company complex after it burned in 1910. A simple eight bay façade on the southern elevation (front) features paired windows with rusticated stone sill and lintel courses. Storefronts are still present but all but two have been heavily altered. The cast iron cornice and brick parapet have been removed. The western elevation has similar features. The exterior wall is plain brick that may have a partially concealed cornice over the storefronts. The building still functions as a combination of storefront commercial space and second-floor office space. For many years the building housed a G.C. Murphy five-and-dime store. The biggest print company in town fills half of the ground floor with the best coffee/tea shop in town in the other half – two retail shops that are perfect for an architect’s office.
I have been here for six months and have just about finished unpacking. My one recommendation to you is DON’T move your office and home at the same time!! But if you find yourself in this part of Western New York, stop by for a cherry chai and a visit to my bamboo-filled office.
