True Green Cities/Celebrating Thirteen Years: The Restoration of the Brick House
Celebrating Thirteen Years! It’s been thirteen years since I launched Barbara A. Campagna/Architecture + Planning, PLLC on April 19th, 2011 and while many things have changed, my goal to work on “greening what’s already here” continues to be met, often in places I never expected.
The Brick House at Philip Johnson’s Glass House
For my last official 13th Anniversary blog, I am delighted to share that next week I will be honored to attend the grand opening of the restored Brick House, the guest house at Philip Johnson’s Glass House. I served as the Graham Gund Architect of the National Trust from 2006-2011, overseeing the architecture at the National Trust’s 29 historic sites. The Glass House was probably my favorite of these internationally historic sites – because it told the story of one architect’s architectural growth. The Glass House and its partner house, the Brick House, were built in 1949. For its detailed story read Christopher Hawthorne’s NYTimes Article.
Sadly in 2008 I had to recommend that we close the Brick House to the public due to its ongoing damage from water infiltration, mold and insect infestations. We hired a team to evaluate the conditions of the house and develop a preservation plan. At long last the Brick House opens next week after a thorough and authentic restoration. I look forward to celebrating its reopening and will write a more comprehensive discussion of the project after my visit next week.
