True Green Cities/Celebrating Fourteen Years: Protecting Historic Window Openings

Celebrating Fourteen Years!  It’s been fourteen years since I launched Barbara A. Campagna/Architecture + Planning, PLLC on April 19th, 2011 and while many things have changed, my goal to work on “greening what’s already here” continues to be met, often in places I never expected.

Protecting the Window Openings at the Buffalo Central Terminal

The Buffalo Central Terminal was built 1926-1930 and listed on the National Register in 1984. The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation is implementing Capital Improvements to protect and stabilize the Terminal and Tower in preparation for upcoming development and rehabilitation.

Many of the existing windows have had protection installed on them over time. This past summer we installed Window Protection to protect the windows that are open or where previous protection has failed or is damaged. Along with protecting the building, louvered openings were introduced to provide ventilation. As previous protection included both plywood and plexiglass/translucent plastic board, careful consideration was taken to provide visual continuity on the exterior, address safety and security concerns and maintain some daylight in the spaces.

The protection methodology and survey were prepared following the guidelines in the National Park Service Preservation Brief 31, Mothballing Historic Buildings.  Our drawing package included plans of the Terminal and Tower, Elevations and a coordinated window survey. Each window in the Terminal and the Tower was surveyed.  The protection was installed over the summer.  The next stabilization steps include exterior masonry restoration and rehabilitation of part of the Terminal’s concourse to allow occasional events again.
